ROXY MUSIC WITH BRIAN FERRY
EL CAMPELLO
July 30th 2005

Still Rockin'

I hate to admit this, but the last time I saw Ferry and Roxy Music was sometime around 1976 at the Albert Hall... That was one great gig!

So, El Campello, somewhere close to Alicante, a one day music fest with Roxy headlining, mmmm....

El Campello was the penultimate stop in the European tour to show the world that Roxy music can still do it. No new Album to promote - although they are said to be recording one as we speak. So it seems that this is just a tour for the fun of it. And fun they had!

They all look pretty good, besuited and very business-like, The stage is soon filled with a suprising number of people including the core band, Brian Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, Chris Spedding, Paul Thomson and assorted others including two great ladies on Percussion, keyboards and a great electric Violin (Louise Peacock), a couple of great backing Vocalists and some (not so great) Bluebell type dancers.

Ferry hasn't changed, the trademark sharp suit and the moves are all still there (he still does that slow dig move!) but it is very definitely a Roxy show and it's mainy the early catalogue starting with re-make/re-model.

As I said earlier, the emphasis was on fun, the band were clearly enjoying themselves and so were the very healthy crowd. Lot's of Brits in the audience - of a certain age - I was probably sitting with some of them in the Albert Hall all those years ago...

Andy Mackay plays great sax, Manzanera and Spedding both play great guitar, and the entire band are extremely tight.

Highlights of the evening for me were Virginia Plain, Jealous Guy and Do the Strand, the encore. The crowd tried and tried to get them back for another Otra! but one was enough, hey, that's ok, they aren't young men any more!
