VALENCIA IN AUGUST

FIESTA TIME IN VALENCIA'S TOWNS AND VILLAGES - IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT LA TOMATINA!
August is traditionally the time for local fiestas around Valencia's towns and villages (there are over 600 annual fiestas in the Valencia Community alone!)- look in the local papers for 'Fiestas Patronales' or 'Pueblos en Fiestas' - there are Moors and Christians parades and mock battles, Paella cookouts, day-time fireworks(mascletàs, fireworks at 2pm mainly for noise! the mother of which has to be seen-and heard- along the streets of Godella, just a few stops on the metro from Valencia city centre on Tuesday 24th August) huge night- time firework displays, dances, carnival parades, fun runs and cycle races, food fights (La Tomatina is the most famous, but there are win and water fights , cologne fights and La Raima, a grape fight) - and best of all, most of these activities are absolutely free!

The 1.6m € agreement, the cost of which is being shared by the Valencian and national tourist boards and Ryanair will mean that when this the seventh Spanish, base re-opens, ten new routes will be launched by the airline, five national: Fuerteventura, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Santiago de Compostela and Seville, and the remainder foreign, to Marrakech, Munich/West, Paris/Beauvais and Trieste. IVAM
Welsh Artist Julian Opie brings his cut-outs, paintings and LED pictures to Valencia in a major new show for the gallery.

Opie is considered one of the most significant artists of his generation. Opie has developed his own reductive formal language which seeks to reflect, not reality itself, but rather the way in which reality is represented.

Drawing from influences as diverse as billboard signs, classical portraiture and sculpture, to classical Japanese woodblock prints, Opie 'paints' using a variety of media and technologies which enable him to make three-dimensional explorations of his subjects.

"Half the reason for making an exhibition is simply to get a chance to see your own work properly. I’m always very grateful for this opportunity. When asked to make an exhibition I always travel to the town to see the space and begin the process of envisaging works in place. I am good at this. I can easily look at a blank wall, an empty room, and imagine my works in there. So I make a kind of mental slide show of all the works I have and works I am intending to make and jot down ideas on a scrap of paper.

Back in the studio I draw out the floor plan of the gallery on the computer and start to drop images of my work onto the plan. I try to make a kind of story, a narrative, using the accidents of the architecture. Sometimes I need to make new works, sometimes the opportunities give me the chance to try out entirely new things. Some works I would have made anyway, others are adapted and expanded for the space.

Where possible I try to push out from the actual showing space. The entrance lobby, the façade, the windows, the invite card and catalogue are all spaces to be used, places to extend the narrative."
Julian Opie, speaking at his Press Conference 01 June 2010

NEW REGATTA FOR VALENCIA!
RC44 CLASS
Russell Coutts, head honcho at BMW Oracle the team that won the Americas Cup in Valencia in their giant multihull on the waters off Valencia earlier this year, has announced a new RC44 circuit regatta for Valencia between July 26 and August 1. Russell also announced that James Spithill, Paul Cayard, Terry Hutchinson, Ray Davies and his boss at BMW Oracle Larry Ellison, will compete for the week.

These regattas are a real spectator sport, the 13.75 metre yachts (designed by Russel, incidentally) race close to the shore line to make sure that the maximum number of people can watch and enjoy the spectacle. Valencia 2007 Consortium's Jorge Gisbert said that the staging of these races had cost nothing to the city. Coutts wants the regatta to become a regular event in Vallencia's sporting calendar. This may be the closest we get to another America's Cup!
