Day of the Virgin Dia de La Virgen de los Desamparados 10-11 May
10 May is the weekend of the Day of the Virgin.
There is bullfighting in the Plaza de Toros on both the Saturday and the Sunday at 6:00pm
If you have never seen the festivities for the Day of the Virgin on the Sunday in the Plaza de la Virgen - It is a must, though if you don't like crowds, watch it on the television. The Plaza is absolutely crammed with people awaiting the appearance of La Virgen de los Desamparados who is carried out of the Basilica on the shoulders of 20 men - the crowd surges to touch her as she is carried around the Plaza de la Virgen and through to the Plaza de la Reina where she is taken back inside. Children and toddlers are lifted above the heads of the crowd to touch her and adults body surf too!
There are events the whole weekend, on the Saturday evening there is an orchestral concert under the stars and people tend to stay around all night in the square for a solemn Mass.
