Valencia's Teatro Principal becomes a Tablao Flamenco

20 May to 7 June

Flamenco music and dance are the order of the say when the Teatro Principal becomes a Tablao Flamenco for 3 weeks. A great line-up of big names will each take the stage.

This short season starts with Pitingo who presents Soulería, featuring not just pure flamenco music, but the music of such diverse musicians as Bob Marley, The Beatles, Police, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Nirvana, among others. Pitingo will be aided and accompanied by the The Blake Heritage Singers, a gospel choir from New Orleans.

Nuevo Ballet Español, choreographed by Rodriguez & Rojas, a dancing duo who have been likened to the likes of Take That, present Sangre, a flamenco ballet, described by their publicity machine as a Passionate panorama of Flamenco, a mix of traditional and modern. The show was received with mixed reviews when it ran for a short season at London's Sadlers Wells, but all the critics were unanimous in saying that it was worth seeing for the duo alone!

María Pagés is one of Spain’s leading flamenco virtuosos and the recipient of her country’s highest honor, the National Dance Award. Her latest work, Autoretrato, was originally commissioned by Baryshnikov for Baryshnikov Arts Center. Performed by her company of nine extraordinary dancers and musicians, Autoretrato continues Pagés innovative journey into the depths of flamenco and beyond.

Pitingo, 20 - 24 May, presents Soulería.

The building work is well on time and it looks as if the 500 Tournament will be the opening event at the Agora. During the tournament the hall will house the centre court with room for more than 5,000 spectators. The Royal Ballet comes to the Palau de les Arts

The ballet returns to the Palau de les Arts in the hands of Carlos Acosta and The Royal Ballet. The Cuban dancer, one of the best dancers of today, hailed by the press as the “successor of Nureyev” and the “new Nijinski” together with the UK's finest Ballet company, Covent Garden's The Royal Ballet will present a show with choreography by Robbins, Stevenson, MacMillan and Balanchine. In the pit, Paul Murphy, musical director of the Royal Ballet of Birmingham, will conduct the Orquestra of the Comunitat Valenciana.

The Program is as follows

Carlos Acosta and Begoña Cao will open the evening with 'Afternoon of a Faun' as Choreographed by film director Jerome Robbins who choreographed a version based on Nijinsky's 1911 version with music by Debussy and has since become a classic of the North American Ballet repertoire.

The End Of Time, interpreted by Hikaru Kobayashi and Arionel Vargas, with choreography by Ben Stevenson and music by Rachmaninoff. This pas de deux explores the bond between the last man and woman on earth.

The third piece of the program will be Manon, one of works of reference of the Royal Ballet created by Kenneth MacMillan. MacMillan's Manon has been one of the Company's signature works since its creation in 1974. Based on Abbe Prevost's l'Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut this magnificent ballet follows the fall of the central character, Manon, from Parisian courtesan to a fugitive in the Louisiana swamps. Principal parts will be danced by Carlos Acosta and Marianela Núñez.

Apollon Musagète, a ballet in two acts composed by Igor Stravinski for the Russian Ballet Company, will be the concluding piece of this wonderful evening. Choreographed by George Balanchine, who conceived a young and wild Apolo (Carlos Acosta) that represents the glorification of the masculine dance.

MARCH

EARTH HOUR IN VALENCIA

Lights out for Earth Hour. That’s the message circling around the globe as the clock ticks down to the action hour: 8 p.m. on March 29. The organizers, backed by World Wildlife Fund, are hoping that millions of people around the world will turn off lights and other electrical appliances not in use.

This worldwide light-switch flipping won’t be as dramatic as it sounds — even from the vantage of the International Space Station — since 8 p.m. arrives at a different time in each time zone.

Valencia has agreed to become one of the participating cities which include Bangkok, Brisbane, Buenos Aires, Christchurch, Copenhagen, Dubai, Dublin, Fiji, Halifax, Manila, Montreal, San Juan, Scott Base (Antarctica), Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Toronto. Valencia is turning off the lights on major public buildings for the hour.

There are two key objectives for Earth Hour. The first is to engage as many households, communities and business to turn off their lights for one hour on March 29. The second objective is to measure the change in our greenhouse gas emissions over the following 12 months, aiming for a reduction in the year following Earth Hour. The website estimates that if the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney during that hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

Earth Hour is turning out to be a major public-relations coup for the organizers — it’s backed by the World Wildlife Fund — and provides a positive outlet for society’s current need to “do something” about the environment. What could be simpler than turning off your lights for an hour, on a weekend, in early evening?

So, don't forget - this Saturday 28 March at 8.00 pm - wherever you are, turn it off for an hour - let's just see if helps...

DESIGNER HEAVEN!

Mercado De Fuencarral opens in Valencia!

I know, you'll be saying that there are quite enough shops and shopping centres in town already, but this latest is well worth a visit. At the top end of the Río Túria towards the new Parque Cabacera is the sparking MDF (Mercado De Fuencarral), two floors of designer stores and a floor of food, drink and entertainment, and topped by a floor of multiplex cinemas showing a great regular selection of movies in Original Version (VOS).

Valencia is now the new site for this great concept which originated in Madrid, International designer names like Adidas, Camper, Chevignon, Pepe Jeans, Puma and Mango Accessories are to be found alongside lesser known but equally as interesting shops selling everything from jewellery to clothes to works of art and luxury foods and drink.

There are great places to eat and drink too, with free wifi and a DJ on hand all through the day and late into the night playing your favourite sounds. The Sofa Club is the heart of Fuencarral a place to sit and relax and take a coffee or a cocktail or catch a concert or your favourite dj. There is also Laydown, a restaurant where you do just that, serving food and drink all day and dinner shows too. Pepita, a bar restaurant serving great food and drink. Propaganda Cafè, serves great shakes and smoothies and the best burger in town. Opera Prima have two locations serving great refreshments and there is Waqas Döner Kebab.

It will come as no surprise that Fuencarral is the place to be on New year's Eve!

LA TOMATINA - LUXURY TOUR

Whatever you have read or heard or seen on film, nothing really prepares you fully for the madness that is Buñol's main event of the year, La Tomatina. There are two great articles here for you to read more about it.

It all takes place on the dot of 11am on the last Wednesday of August, which this year just happens to be 27 August.

La Tomatina is not a desperately old festival, it is said to have started in the nineteen-forties when a local councillor just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and got pelted with tomatoes. It has survived banning over the years to become one of the best known festivals in the world.

La Tomatina is quite mad, but without wanting to sound like we are preaching, however mad the Spanish and fiestas appear to be, they stick to rules, the rules are made for your safety. Here they are, as published on the official site,

You must not bring bottles or other type of objects which could cause an accident.

You must not break, knot or throw T-shirts. - A wet t-shirt really hurts when it hits you! A knotted wet t-shirt can do serious damage!

The tomatos must be squashed before throwing them, to avoid hurting people. Most of the tomatoes, when they reach you are already squashed but a solid tomato also really hurts!

You must be careful of any lorry.

When you hear the second shot, you must stop throwing tomatos. - The Spanish always do.

By the Way, If you want to visit Buñol this year for the world's messiest festival contact us at tomatina@thisisvalencia.com, THISISVALENCIA ARE OFFERING A LUXURY COACH TOUR WITH LUNCH AND A SWIM ON THE WAY BACK - ALL FOR ONLY 55 EUROS ICLUDING THE FOOD, THE SWIM AND A PAIR OF PROTECTIVE GOGGLES

JUNE

Observatori 2008

This Annual festival of the experimental Arts and electronic sound is back - At the Centro del Carmen de Valencia - 05-29 June.

The Opening night concert(thursday 05 June) was washed-out by the torrential rain but the crowds still turned up hoping that the rains would stop. The Berliners, Bodi Bill, threw a wobbly and said that they couldn't perform in these conditions, packed up their instruments and went - leaving the (wet) audience a little bemused and with music from CDs. However, there's lots to see in the exhibition areas and more performances throughout the next three weeks...

La Fura dels Baus perform 'Anell de llum' in the open air tomorrow 13 June and 19 June at 22.30. It's a free performance outside the Palau de les Arts and gives the public a taste of what the audience will see when they go to see Siegfied. This unique performance by the troupe who gave us the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics, is in three parts and is based on Light, Dawn, Daylight and Sunset. Swimming pools with sirens, cranes, moving bodies, giants, pendulums with 30 suspended people, an angel trumpeter , the dragoon of `Siegfried', aerial theater and a human network composed of 42 people raised in the air by a crane are just some of the spectacular thing you can expect to see `Anell de llum', (Ring of Light) SEE YOUTUBE BELOW FOR A TASTER

MAYO

FORWARD FESTIVAL - THE WINNERS REVIEWS

Saludos a Thisisvalencia y sinnamon.....gracias!!!!!!Mariano

Gracias a Tivlc y sinnamon!!! Un saludo, Héctor.

Being the first ' FORWARD' festival I think it was undersold, but this has advantages, so although being in a large conference hall, it felt much more like a private or underground gig. which really appealed to me. The crowd was only about 15-20 people deep.

I liked the mix of DJ set and live band/group, it gave much more choice for the fans, and while Fangoria was a big hit, Underworld did seem to be the favourite doing many of their favourites with some cool video and instalations on the set.

My only complaint was that the DJ booth was at the same height as the crowd, so all you could see, unless watching the big screens, was the top of the DJ's head!

Generally a good night, which I am sure will increase in popularity with time. Mike.

MYA NIGHTCLUB OPENS

When we were asked to go to the opening of a new club in town we jumped at the chance. The Valencia club scene, not being its best at the moment, needs some new competition and what better than a beautifully designed, little place, set in the idyllic grounds of the Ciudad de Artes y Ciencias.

Ok, it took us a while to find it, Miss C and Anita complaining in their heels, and Mister Madrid moaning as usual, but once we got there we were knocked back.

M.Y.A is the newest member of the clever L'Umbracle family.  Full of the bold and the beautiful of Valencia, a band stand above the bar, a dj booth in between the huge VIP area and the dance floor, 3 bars, space for 500 people, and fantastic toilets. Being the opening night, they had a strangly interesting band playing for maybe a little too long, the main singer dancing as though she was on drugs and no-one was really sure if she was singing in English or Spanish, but she certainly got the party started. Free endless champagne until 2am, and gorgeous people walking around with red vodka shots in lab glasses. Strange and beautiful pictures projected on the vast walls, gogo dancers that didn't dance much but were wearing outfits any girl in her right mind would kill for and perfume on sale in the toilets. The only down point, is, unless youre a VIP theres nowhere to rest your heels and catch your breath...

All in all, a top opening night, and we'll definetely be back soon.
